Are the melody or the lyrics copyrighted, because in Finland, we sing the translated version? Or both?

In which case, is singing in, say, a class considered public performance, hence sorta-kinda illegal?

@Christina: Hong Kong people sing “Happy Birthday to ” on the third line. Not grammatically incorrect or anything way off, but that’s not the proper lyrics.
